North Korea: A Snapshot of History, Politics, and Culture
Background
North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) refers to the country as "DPRK," while South Korea is simply known as "Korea." In 1948, the DPRK was established under the leadership of President Kim Il-sung.
Political System
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is an authoritarian state ruled by the Kim family for the past 70 years. Formerly known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or DPRK, it was founded in 1948 after the United States and the Soviet Union divided the Korean Peninsula along the 38th parallel.
