Bezos Earth Fund Invests in Pioneering Methane Reduction Project

Scientists Aim to Develop Vaccine to Cut Cattle Emissions

Supported by a generous $94 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund, an ambitious project is underway to develop a proof-of-concept vaccine that could significantly reduce methane emissions in cattle. This initiative is part of a wider effort by the Pirbright Institute and the Global Methane Hubs to make livestock farming more sustainable.

Methane emissions from cattle are a major contributor to global warming, and finding ways to reduce them is essential for mitigating climate change. The vaccine being developed by ArkeaBio, a US start-up, has shown promising results in early trials, reducing methane emissions by 13%.

The Bezos Earth Fund, founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is committed to supporting scientific research and innovation that addresses the climate crisis. The grant will provide funding for the development and testing of the vaccine, as well as for scaling up production if the vaccine is successful.

In addition to the vaccine research, the Bezos Earth Fund is also investing $57 million in other climate food solutions, including developing low-carbon feed additives and improving livestock management practices. These efforts aim to make food production more sustainable and reduce its environmental impact.

The project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing the challenges of climate change. By bringing together scientists, researchers, and funders, it has the potential to make a real difference in reducing methane emissions and protecting the planet.
