Early Life and Education

Lazarus Chakwera was born in 1955 in Lilongwe, Malawi. He received his early education at a local primary school and later attended Chancellor College, the University of Malawi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and theology.

After graduating, Chakwera worked as a pastor for the Assemblies of God in Malawi. He also served as president of the Malawi Assemblies of God and was a member of the World Pentecostal Fellowship.

Entry into Politics

In 2013, Chakwera entered politics when he became the leader of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The MCP is one of the oldest and largest political parties in Malawi, having been founded in 1959.

Under Chakwera's leadership, the MCP won the 2019 presidential election, ending the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) 10-year rule.

Presidency

Chakwera became president of Malawi on June 28, 2020. Since taking office, he has focused on fighting corruption, improving the economy, and promoting human rights.

One of Chakwera's first acts as president was to declare a state of emergency in the fight against corruption. He has also launched several initiatives to improve the economy, including a $1 billion stimulus package and a plan to create 1 million jobs.
